Veteran Tamil film director K. Balachander, who was
the mentor of superstar Rajinikanth and actor Kamal Haasan, died at a private
hospital in Chennai on Tuesday evening.The end came at 7.10pm, doctors at Kauvery Hospital said.
They said the 84-year-old cinema legend was suffering from severe urinary tract infection and fever which did not subside even after continuous treatment for the last one week.
Balachander, whose film career spanned over 45 years, won nine National film awards and several Filmfare awards. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Balachander portrayed woman as bold characters in his movies. Some of his critically acclaimed and well-known films include ‘Aval Oru Thodar Kathai,’ ‘Sindhu Bhairavi,’ ‘Manmadha Leelai’ ‘Anthuleni Katha’ and ‘Moondru Mudichu.’
